Broken Bells - "The Ghost Inside" (featuring Hall & Oates)
Here's the backstory, courtest of NY Mag :
Filmmaker and friend of the band Matt McCormick says the clapping in “The Ghost Inside” reminded him of Hall & Oates “Private Eyes,” so he “looked up the 'Private Eyes' video on YouTube and realized that song structure and tempo was pretty darn close to that of 'Ghost Inside,' and from there just started playing around with syncing up the visuals from the 'Private Eyes' video with 'The Ghost Inside.” Then he superimposed James Mercer's mouth on the face of Mr. Daryl Hall and called it a day. Check out the bewildering, mesmerizing result above.

Captain Beatfart Mix #7 -> Wasabi Gas: A Full-Bodied Blend Of Japanese Funk, Fuzz & Pop
I thought I'd try something a little different with this podcast; instead of a random assortment of mind-blowing tracks, this is a mix of mind-blowing Japanese tracks from the late 60s and early 70s. For the most part they all incorporate psychedelic fuzz, funk and pop in some form or another.
DOWNLOAD
Captain Beatfart Mix #7 -> Wasabi Gas: A Full-Bodied Blend Of Japanese Funk, Fuzz & Pop by Captain Beatfart
I went into this knowing the broad strokes, but not a ton about Japanese music from this era: The Spiders were the Japanese Beatles, The Finger 5 were the Japanese Jackson 5, Shinki Chen was the Japanese Jimi Hendrix; as well as some of the prog/proto-metal bands like the Flower Travellin' Band and Blues Creation.
I made it my mission while I was visiting Japan to try to find the Japanese James Brown.
Well, I failed*.
It turns out that while funk did seep into the Japanese consciousness in scattershot forms of funkiness, it never really took off as a scene in Japan like rock and later, disco did.
Despite not finding the Japanese equivalent of JB, I stumbled into a lot of great music while I was there, ate a lot of ramen, met a lot of great people in Japan (and some not so great, like the dickhead manager at the Disk Union in the Nihonbashi area of Osaka who kicked me out the store for bringing too many records to the listening station despite the clerk letting me do so...but that's water under the bridge...) and spent way too much time and money looking for records. I meant to put this mix out in May, but I kept finding more and more great shit online and at fairs so I kept putting it off. I finally decided that I had to put it out now since I'd never stop uncovering new stuff, so here it is.
You probably won't like everything I put on here, but chances are pretty good that even the most fervent musicus nerdus among you won't know most (or any) of the music in here. There's been a ton of compilations covering Brazilian, Indian, Nigerian and even Thai music, but Japan's music scene has been largely ignored in the Western reissue scene aside from a handful GS comps (I'm not sure if this is a case of expensive licensing or apathy). I listened to literally about 8 days worth of music to boil it down to the 30 or so tracks I put in this hour long mix. I'll no doubt be sprinkling more Japanese stuff in future podcasts (specifically stuff by P-Model & The Plastics who I love but didn't really fit with the rest of this stylistically) and look forward to being able to free my mind from obsessing over this for a while.
I hope you like it...

Feel free to spread it!
*There is a guy named Zainichi Funk who put out a record earlier this year who does a pretty faithful JB thing, but I was mostly focusing on trying to find artists from the 60s~70s rather than modern artists for this podcast. You can check out Zainichi Funk's video here.

Optimogeddon
The duo that make up Optimo are on my Mt. Rushmore of DJ heroes.
Since 1997 they've been throwing a weekly party in Glasgow called, appropriately enough, Optimo (Espacio). I didn't get hip to them until around 2004 when a friend of mine burned me a copy of their How To Kill The DJ mix and totally changed the way I approached DJing and what I thought of as "dance music".
Anyways, this past Sunday was the final night of the club.
One of my favorite blogs, RIPPED IN GLASGOW, has graciously posted the full 7 hour set from the final night for you to download.

Scottie Pippen Got Jumped By A Pack Of Midgets
This story made my week. Seriously.
In 2008, Scottie Pippen was duped into being in a direct to video movie that featured Pip being assaulted by a group of midgets, which included Gary Coleman.
Scottie out out this press release this week:
"Given the recent controversy surrounding Gary Coleman, the fact that I've been repeatedly asked questions about my small part in the movie 'Midgets vs. Mascots,' and a related video posted online which shows me being assaulted by a group of Little People, I want to clear up any misunderstandings.
"In 2008, I agreed to play a cameo role in a movie titled 'A Tribute to Big Red' (now titled 'Midgets vs. Mascots'). My role was scripted, and the first two scenes went off without any problems. During the third scene, I was told that four Little People, along with actor Gary Coleman, were going to become angry with something I said and storm off as the scene ends. Instead, they basically attacked me, with Gary Coleman apparently climbing on a chair behind me to hit me over the head with a phone (twice).
"A short fight ensued before I heard the film's director yell 'cut.' As I recall, some of the Little People were laughing as the director explained that the scene was 'sort of like an episode of the TV show 'Punk'd.'' At that point, I left quickly without a clear understanding of what was going on.
"As for the Little Person who claims he was injured in the attack, I really don't think I caused the injury or can be held to blame. To the best of my knowledge, there is no action being taken against me, nor am I pursuing any action. For the record, I have never seen the movie and, in hindsight, wish I'd not been involved with it. I simply wanted to make clear my role and position as I understand the movie is coming out soon. I will not be answering any further questions regarding the film."
More info here.
...and video evidence:
As a bonus, here's some vintage Scottie Pippen
